1.What
are online newspaper paywalls?
Are they effective?
A paywall is a method of restricting access to content via a paid subscription. They are effective in that some people have no option than to pay via subscription if they want to see that particular newspaper, otherwise people can buy other paper newspapers.
2.How
are newspapers
currently funded?
(think about advertising
space, cover price of a newspaper & paywalls)
Funded through advertisements that are printed in the newspaper, circulation price and online paywalls, currently only a small percentage but will increase when the circulation price has to get higher.
3.What
are the roles of the IPSO
and IMPRESS?
Why do they exist? When have they been important?
IMPRESS is an independent press regulator in the UK. It was the first to be recognised by the Press Recognition Panel. Unlike IPSO, IMPRESS is fully compliant with the recommendations of the Leveson Inquiry. No national newspaper has signed up to the new regulator; most continue to be members of the unrecognised Independent Press Standards Organisation.
4.Why
is the circulation
and advertising revenue of
newspapers declining?
Modern technology has meant that more people are acsessing news on their phones, tablet and computers there has been a he decline in people purchasing physical copies. Advertising revenue is further declining as lot of people are using ad blockers online so they don't have to see them.
5.How
far can online newspapers reach in terms of audience? Research The Guardian/Observer as examples. What online formats have they got?
The guardian/observer have an app, a website and circulation reaching a range of older, younger, male, female and politically different people.
6.What
are the difficulties in regulating
an international online newspaper?
Law is more difficult to regulate online as there is not one person to pinpoint. Illegal acts can not be removed as easily from online as screenshots cannot be removed, and the poulation who have them can easily reshare it. In addition to this laws vary between countries so what may not be acceptable in the UK may be somewhere else making a grey area between what can and cannot be published. Furthermore one newspaper cannot include every piece of news from every country and some key details may be missed out.
